Outreach Type: Children In need

Give a brief history of your nonprofit’s story. Please include how and why it was established, and who has been involved.

As an interior decorator, I would continually have situations where clients would want me to remove items that they no longer wanted. The items were normally gently used and in good shape, and often times, I paid to remove the items. I have always had a heart for children that were suffering and had been thinking for years how I could make a difference and one day the light bulb came on! We could take donations and repurpose furnishings to help children and families with children that were in need… Project 828 was born.

My young son, Hudson also had a tug at his heart for hurting children and after a trip to Africa, he kept asking what he could do to help children. Playing sports was a consistent activity he was involved in and after a weekend of routine basketball we came up with an idea of how youth athletes could use their talents in sports to bring awareness and raise funds for these children.

Our friends, coaches and athletes helped us to get our initial ideas and efforts off the ground. Play With Purpose Sports launched in 2016 and has raised close to $100,000 and has held multiple events benefiting children with cancer, orphans and foster children. They have done shoe drives, provided food for Hurricane Harvey victims, provided gift baskets for children with cancer and much more. Restoration Initiative jumped in after Hurricane Harvey and helped furnish dozens of homes for foster families and partnered with Houston Furniture Bank in which we acted as a disaster relief organization and helped over 150 families with at-risk children get basic furnishings. RI has redecorated foster children rooms and a family hangout room at a residential treatment group home.

We have had the assistance of many private donors and have had companies such as Academy, BMW, Truluck’s, Alight Solutions, Centex Construction, FMG, BP Foundation, Farmer’s Insurance, Northwestern Mutual, Safeway Driving, Lexington Home Furnishings, Uttermost, Inc., Hooker Furniture, Donna’s Home Furnishings, Bartholet’s Home Furnishings, Get Wrapped TV, Binswanger Glass, and many others help in campaigns and events.

What outreach or services does your nonprofit offer?

The Restoration Initiative is designed to seek out families with children in need and bless them by providing new and re-purposed home furnishings and decorative themed children’s rooms. We aim to create a safe and beautiful environment where the child in need can flourish. We reach out to foster care group homes, foster families, and families that have faced adverse situations

Play with Purpose Sports empowers and unites youth athletes to think past themselves and become leaders by using their gifts and talents to raise awareness, funds and opportunities for those in foster care, orphans, children with rare diseases and cancer. We achieve this through campaigns, events and camps.

What is your ultimate goal for your nonprofit?

Our mission is to bring light and hope to children in need and create a world where all children in need flourish. Our goal is to continue our growth and eventually have a budget that allows us to make every Residential Group Treatment Home in the greater Houston area a true HOME that is inspiring and beautiful for these children to live in. When we have accomplished the correct model, we would like to move into other geographical areas.

Our program Play With Purpose Sports will continue to work with schools and club sports as they grow their events. We have already been invited by a San Antonio School District to duplicate an event that was hosted in Houston. We are working to create a model here that is duplicatable and will reach thousands of youth athletes which will ultimately provide incredible support for children in need.
